During Ramadan the fighters of the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) want to double their attacks on Ethiopian forces and government installations.

The ICU was pushed back in 2006 by Ethiopian forces intervening in the Somali civil war which lasts about 20 years now. Since then the ICU is slowly gaining back territory. A few days ago they claimed to have captured the third largest city of Somalia Kismayo.

After bigger military defeats in 2006 the Islamic Courts Union is gaining back its power and momentum. AlJazeera reports that the rebels have captured Kismayo Somalia’s third largest city.

The fun never stops at the Horn of Africa.

There seems to be yet another Coup in Mauritania. Mauritania is one of these fucked up countries where coups are the normal way of changing the government. The last coup was in 2005.

And this is yet another classic coup. First the State TV went of the air and than there were troops moving in the capital. The former commander of the Presidential guard took over according to AlJazeera. I wonder how long he’ll last. At the moment the Coup is bloodless and my guess is that it’ll stay that way – ok maybe they’ll kill the ex-President – but probably the population of Mauritania is not interested enough in those things anymore to fight for one site or the other.

Gary "War Nerd" Brecher wrote an article on Mauritania’s way of changing the government in 2005 when the last coup happened.

Update: There are Protests in Mauritania both for and against the Coup. So maybe they do care or at least some of them.

During the Genocide in Rwanda approximately 500,000 to 1,000,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu were killed by Hutu militias. Gary "War Nerd" Brecher has some background information about the Genocide in his Article about the Congo War.

As the BBC reports Rwanda now accuses France of taking Part in the Genocide. The accusations go so far that they even claim French soldiers actively participated

“French forces directly assassinated Tutsis and Hutus accused of hiding Tutsis… French forces committed several rapes on Tutsi survivors,” said a statement from the justice ministry cited by AFP news agency.
